India has held Asian Games, SAF Games, Afro-Asian Games in the past. Holding such events helps the country in many ways. First of all, it sends message to international community that despite being a developing country we are in position to hold games of repute. Secondly, such games bring in large number of tourist from all over the world benefiting economy by foreign exchange earnings. Thirdly, it helps improving sports infrastructure in the country which is in a very poor condition. Fourthly, sports as a profession is not encouraged in our country but such events will encourage youngsters to take up sports. Moreover, these games are symbol of harmony, peach and unity.
Yesterday, the way India-Shri Lanka cricket match was abandoned due to under-prepared pitch, I am really worried for forthcoming Common Wealth Games also. Both national and international observers have been raising questions about pace of work. Even questions were raised in parliament and subject was discussed at a great length. Just few days back, Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Treasurer Austin Sealy said India has made ‘noticeable’ progress towards the October 3-14 Games, but a lot remained to be done. Autin adds, ‘There has been a noticeable progress over the last two months, but with effectively only nine months remaining, the intensity must continue, and in fact, works must be further accelerated’. Well, now IOC has shown some sense of urgency but I just don’t understand that what they have been doing all this while? If we fail to hold a successful game, it will be a huge international embarrassment and will raise doubts about India becoming a super power in future.
I think 27 years ago we were better prepared when we held Asian Games in 1982 without any glitches, if I remember correctly then Sports Minister Buta Singh did a tremendous job. Present Sports Minister Mr. Gill was Sports Secretary in 1982 and he used to spend the better part of his day at under construction sports venues. Rajiv ji and Indira ji were regular visitors to these venues during construction. The officials engaged in these preparations were under orders to remove Red Tape; and take decision very promptly. I don’t see that kind of enthusiasm and eagerness to perform this time around. I don’t know whether we have moved forward or gone backward since 1982.
Even a developing country like Brazil has managed to beat mighty USA in its bid for 2016 Olympics. I have a big question in my mind, whether we are ever going to be in position to claim and hold Olympics. I have my doubts because some one like Suresh Kalmadi is at the helm of affairs. Regarding some important issue related to sports I called him many times but neither had he had decency nor responsibility to return my call. Union Sports Minister Shri M.S. Gill is an epitome of grace and humility while Suresh Kalmadi is symbol of affluence, arrogance and inaccessibility. Both belong to two different world of culture and only God knows how devil and deep sea will be able to get submerged into one unit for the success of sports in general and common wealth games in particular.

Dear Amarji,
It is indeed shocking to learn that the preparation for commonwealth games has been behind schedule. There is very little to say about the India-Sri Lanka kotla fiasco. It is quite lucky that none of the players were injured. As I slowly grasp as to why so many politicians travel abroad, getting medical service abroad and yet when they come back – do not try to make our infrastructure like the country they visited?? Why our politicians and leaders are stuck in their own world of votes and power? Sports (except for cricket) is treated with disdain. At every level of the system we have corrupt attitude – WHY? Is it the system or ingrained in us? I doubt that we are born corrupt so must be the system. So who will change the system – me, you or WE? To make India super power we have first to be PROUD of who we are rather than aping the popular west.
Arun
Dear Amar Singhji, don’t you think that in order to salvage the image of our country, the responsibility to organise the commonwealth games should be entrusted to a powerful man, an unified command viz. Rahul Gandhi,so that we should not be ashamed of internationally and also Rahul baba can prove his mettle ?
I agree with you… If i recall correctly, even during 1982 asian games, a powerful committee was set up under the leadership of Rajeevji to oversee the games.
Hi Mr.Singh,
Holding Olympics in India is not a dream. Getting more Gold in Olympics is our dream.
We are the most talented population of the world but still striving for single gold medal and we are more than satisfied when we get even a single medal. We competete with our neighbour countries and consider ourself on the top if we beat them in medal tally.
Why don’t we ever competete with US, China or Japan? why don’t we dream to beat any of the given nations?
Just hosting an event will not suffice until we prove our talent and top the charts.

Siddharth

Dear Sir,
I just saw in the net (enews paper Indian Express) that you have your blog started very recently. I am a fan of you and also your close friend Mr.Bachhan. I am really happy so that I can directly communicate to your goodself whenever I feel like expressing views.
When you were taking treatment in Singapore and Mr.Bachhan was next to you, he would update us regarding your health recovery and I had many times send my wishes for speedy recovery.
I admire a lot because whenever you it will be like a bomb exploding. I have also seen that no body else makes any wrong statement towerds you because they know that you will just not keep quiet.
I like you and admire you a lot. Hence forth I shall keep in touch with you Sir.

Respected Amar Singh ji,
I observe that addressing your good self in Hindi seems to be not a correct thing to elicit a response , so this chant now in “Angrezi”. Everybody’s concern for the state of affairs of sports in India (after Kotla fiasco) is true and fair. In globalised scenario where India & Indians are now most frequented topic of discussions and under the lens for any or every activity that goes on there. The age old attitude of “Jugaad” and “Chalta Hai” ought to be changed and it is not untoward to say that our Capital city is embodiment of this culture. Whether it is traffic violation, queue breaching, free passes galore, corruption, pollution, favoritism, rules breaking, tax evasions, etc. Delhi is certainly the capital of India. Instead of setting an example for all the good things, here is a capital city (with abundant glorified history) and its citizens which do absolutely otherwise. Its high time that instead waiting for fiascos to happen and post facto demands for white paper are voiced, the action should be more proactive and ab initio monitoring must be done by revisiting the preparations for CW games, albeit in a responsible manner.

Mr. Singh, there are certain amount of logic in your view but at this point of time i am totally against such type of games being organised in India. Olympics or such type of game are the announcement of your economic might just as Tokyo or Seol or Beijing did in the past. But can we say with confidence that we are in a position to claim it. With advertisement of 8% GDP and 80% population below 1$, is it justified to spend around 50 billion US$ on Olympics? I dont think so..with these amount, we can built at least another network of 4 lane Golden Quadrilateral, 40 IITs,40 Central Universities and another dedicated freith corridor of Railways. As far as branding of the country and tourist inflow is concerned, first we should tap the optimum potential of tourism in the country which is checked by bad infrastructure and worst law and order. Again, Games like Olympis only encourage infrastructure development in a particular city and in India it is Delhi. So, i am totally against it. By pumping money on Delhi we are feeding the nexus of builders, property dealers and corrupt officials and politicians. Why only Delhi? Why not in Indore or Nagpur?
I sometimes surprise that; is it being done for big builders or construction companies? Why they are pushing the idea of Olympics or such type of games? If you have to develop the country you should first decentralise the power system. There must be reconsideration on Centre- State relationship and more allocation must be given to states. More rights should be given to them. If it is not done, we cant check the problem of disparity and no Olympics or Commonwealth will help us.
Thanks.
Dear Amar Singh ji,
The ground realities are in front. But, the responsible people are repeatedly issuing assurances. I suspect they have fall back latent plans in mind, to save their faces behind. It is likely they might quietly go for downsizing the infrastructure and facilities without anyone every knowing. Mediocrity is what they can not rise above at the best of the times. To their benefit, they have no benchmarks set to measure their success or failure. If there are any, at least it is not known to the general public. They are seasoned to make a failure look a success. They are bigger players than we think.
My worry is not about what the whole world will think. My concern is about the precedence it would create for acceptance of failure as a norm.
Regards
Deepak T
My dear Deepak, I have read all your comments and I thank you for you interest in my blog. Yes you are absolutely right in saying that system takes us for granted. The only way to ensure better sensibility is to create pressure by mobilizing public opinion and making them feel that people are watching. That is why I wrote this post and also raised the issue in the parliament.
Dear Amarji
I totally agree with you when you say “these games are symbol of harmony, peach and unity”.
However, in India most of of 1.2 billion people intepret and want to read this sentence as ” Cricket and only Cricket matches are symbol of harmony, peace and unity”. If there is another cricket world cup and few more stadiums needs to be built in India, I am sure you will agree and would be confident that it would be completed very much earlier than the deadline. It is another matter that recent match called off as it was “dangerous”, deadly? Headly all sound the same.
Below is a link of my friends son who won gold for India. May be 1 or 2 hundred people know from the 1.2b. Media, authorities, influential people did not want to focus on such medals although it meant Gold and India Flag was raised. They did not follow their heart or they do not have a applauding type of heart to follow? Should India involve in sports for business or do business and ignore the sports.
Yes agree again with you the need of the hour is to think also on those sports which would definately bring harmony, peace and unity. Best Wishes.
Best Regards
Mario

Dear Mario, thanks for being regular at my blog. Point well taken, I also like cricket but cricket should not grow at the cost of other sports…we need to promote other games also.
Amar Singh ji,
yes its very dis heartning and very poor state of sports in India, though as you mentioned its almost 27 yrs from Asian games we as country could not come to a stage when the world community look at as a contender for any big even to be hold in India, I am glad atleast you have thought in ur mind for sports I believ we can belive healthy India and Deciplined India with sport if promoted properly and if due importance is given to all the sports, even parents today are encouraging their kids to take upsports which are commercially sucessful, I wish you all the best if you can really able to bring this issue as national issue wish yu all the best and take care
Amardeep
Dear Amar Singhji
Its nice to see you on the blog, it makes a gateway of expressing views. I have been seeing you on various channels and the guts you have displayed whenever it comes to voicing out issues. Your blunt messages, sharp diction make you so popular!
Your post on hosting games is absolutely correct. Instead, it will take years for us to move forward when it comes to amenities etc.
Kudos to you AS, i wish to see more of uand ur messages.

Hi,
This trillion dollar economy’s infrastructure will only develop under pressure.
Pressure of CWG has done a lot good. The metro which otherwise would hv taken another 5 yrs, major portion got completed a lot earlier.Delhi new airport worth 9000 crore is getting ready.Hotels are being built, autos are thrown out, highways r being made.CWG has already made a lot good to delhi.
Who cares for CWG, whether its a resounding success or not, we want to be a developed nation with world class infrastructure and these games are facilitators for that.
Only way to improve Mumbai’s infrastructure, which looks like one big slum is to bid for olympics for 2020.In 10 yrs mumbai will get transformed.
Hello Sir
You do have a point but what I feel is that political parties were trying to gain political mileage out of the IND-SL game as Jaitley is from BJP.I know that CWG is a big ask but if we all delhiites stand together, then there is not reason that we can’t make it a success..I hope you also play an active part in it
Cheers

A Day and enough time to re-evaluate the self, life and contribution to Life …
Did we do something to make this world a little better !
Did we do something to make this world a little more human !
Thoughts for self, family and world we live in
Time to re think future and its possibilities
Thanks for the beautiful thought!
Hi Amarji,
Why don’t you write something on your days before you joined active politics?
Dear Amarda
India should not think about the Olympic Games simply because it does not have the infrastructure to host such an event. Compared to this South Africa does have the capabilities to host an event of such proportions.
I was in the Medical Committee for the Asian Games and the SAF Games and was the National Joint Secretary of the Indian Association of Sports Medicine during that period.
The Commonwealth Games would be a lacklustre affair considering the bickering that has been exposed.
I remember India’s first High Commissioner Gopal Krishna Gandhi to South Africa answering to a journalist that South Africa has to learn from India about caring for its citizens irrespective of caste and color. I was with him during that time.
I believe India now needs to learn from South Africa the technicalities and knowhow in hosting such sports events.

Amitabh Mitra
Dear Dr. Mitra, I think more than resources one needs willingness and confidence to achieve difficult task. I think our economy is in much better shape than Brazil. If Brazil can claim Olympics ahead of mighty USA then why can not we?
Dear Amar Singh ji,
It is nice to see you taking interest and replying to some comments (though I’m not among the lucky ones!)
With regards to hosting Olympics, I feel that we are many years from achieving it – also the financial stress that it will put on our country will be immense.
It would be nice if you could write about your elder brother Mr Bachchan, and how your relationship with him started and interesting anecdotes about him.I have been commenting on his blog since a long time and actually it is from there that I got to know that you have also started blogging
Dear Aditya, its not humanly possible for me to respond to all the comments but I am trying to reach out to each and every one who has taken interest in my blog.
You are absolutely right Amarji,
India has a long way to go….Its shameful to even think that we are not progressing at the pace at which the world is…What are your comments on the bridge disaster in Kota? Its ironic that in our great country this happened probably becoz of the highest level of corruption..and if you look at the the quality of things done in the west..It improves the system in totality…A bridge between Vermont and New York is demolished because of age and extreme temperatures…Amazing feat right?
I am currently in the US and it pains my heart to say..Mera bharat Mahan…I hope that with more awareness and interaction with you….maybe I will say happily one day..Mera bharat mahan, right???
Amarji, I would like to know your thoughts on one of the most important aspects affecting the population of India. I work in a Genetics Institute in the US and I strongly feel that the the field of Genetics is lagging behind in our country….With the second largest population in the world, we need to do more…..I wonder who will take that initiative…..I guess that the establishment of Quest Diagnostics in Gurgaon is one step..and an esteemed institute like CCMB, Hyderabad contributes to some extent. I have worked for a short while in CCMB, hence I can confidently state this..However, it is still not available to the masses who have a right to make certain decisions based on the genetic testing…..To give you an example..there are millions of people who have a genetic condition but are absolutely normal..however their children will be born with birth defects and abnormalities of they are not tested and counselled properly. Genetic counselling in India is warranted!!!!
What do you think?
Regards
Alak
Dear Alka, I appreciate your concern about promotion of Genetic Science in India. I know that India has produced many brilliant minds in this field but due to lack of opportunities, most of them go abroad. Let me know if you have any specific proposal, which I can take up as Chairman of Standing Committee of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Government of India). I assure you that I will make a sincere effort to push it.
Dear sir ,
I am with you in your genuine concern.
The biggest threat to the forthcoming CWG is that the organisers are mentally unprepared .
Defensive mechanism is the surest recipe for disaster.
Look at the way the DDCA has taken to defending the wrong rather than setting things right.
Some of the key players in the organising team have an attitude which is not very encouraging.
Why not take this up in the Parliament and get someone who has the authority – influence and passion to take charge till the finishing line .
CWG Management is just not in good hands( no pun intended)
Mohan M Prasad
oops….sorry ..misspelt my name…
Alka
Amarsinghji, your selfless attitude and your strong love to work for your country, to see her prosper and be respected in the world and be a global power in the near future, is to be admired. I wish there are many other politicians in India who are like you with such thoughts and goals. I know of many who only work for themselves and their country does not feature anywhere. For them it is me, me and me‼!
But you stand out far ahead from others as your goals are very honourable. Your goal of serving the people is what the Lions goal is “We Serve”.
To see the lax attitude by this Sports committee is embarrassing as people here in Melbourne has talked about this fiasco as well.
From what you have said, it seems to me that Suresh Kalmadi loves to show his prominence but cannot do anything substantial himself. A pen pusher best at his desk. He should be called to account for every action he takes and if these games venues are not ready, it will be the biggest embarrassment to India and all the Indians abroad. No one will future will trust India to undertake any such projects forget competing for Olympics.
I now read that Ruchika’s case is just about to reopen and this is great news for the family. Certainly, your contribution has to be applauded in this case. Of course the media to not let the issue die has done a great job as well.
Regards to you and the Singh family.
Dharmen
Dear Amarji
My respect to you
The Delhi fiasco i.e. India Srilanka abandoned match must not be politiced.OK fine Since Srilanka was batting and the Captain of the team felt that the pitch is unplayable and to protect his players from injury.Srilankan captain requested to call of the play. The administrator the pitch curator must realise the mistake and just go for next event.Dont spend too much time and money for blaming each other.
Amar Singh ji,
Namashkar, what a refresing write up. Your choice of words is respectable but hard hitting. your inferences are absolutely true and well defined. It is ironical that courage and quality is compramised in taking into account someone like Mr Kalmadi. Media critises those whom they choose to and in this process of selection by media many are overlooked. We as public get the same message with similar seriousness. Reading analysis from your point of view is refresing. Accontability is a forgoten virtue in many departments today. I have no clue what are going to be the circumstances and preparations when thousands of athletes are here. As Indians we do feel and wish that our guests leave happy not dissatisfiesd leaving another topic for the Indian media to kick up a storm.
Respected Amarji (Sir),
Congratulations on being a blogger……
I have a great regards for you…….I respect you because of two simple reasons….One- The name Amar Singh is known for the value of true friendship..apne ko mita denge hum sirf teri hasti banane mein, hazzaro amar kurbaan dosti amar banane mein…………second- your loyality /devotion towards your party where you work as troubleshooter worker….
wish you a successful prosperous 2010

Dear Sir,
I respect your thought and concern……..but we need to think of solution also… whether it is govt official / sports man or p[olitician… In my opinion anything in this world is made up of people and in India we people have a habit of making things pending to the last moment irrespective of size / reputation linked with the project concern…..So I think we need to have proper checks at different stages of the project and also the fines / punishment for the delay need to be very high….example in delhi people follow traffice rules better as compare to other parts of country because they know wrong doing may cost wastage of lot of time (with police man) and big money which is very costly for them………..
congrats sir I heard Rosa plant of reliance power has started generating power….one step forward for growing Uttar pradesh…………

Sunil
Amarji,

Having observed Mr Kalmadi and Mr Gill on TV, I agree to what you have to say about them. I just wish this exercise 2010 CG games don’t turn out to be like the recent Kotla fiasco. That was a shame.
No doubt the games will throw open world level stadiums/facilities for the public. Would it really? Is there any plan in place how these new built facilities will be used once the games are over. I am sure there is a plan how to sell the games village as that is going to fetch huge margins. Please use your resources to ensure that citizens are able to get maximum out of these facilities and they don’t end up in hosting parties or star nites.
Using these resources even if we produce one Olympic winner, the effort wont go waste.
Rajendra S Negi
Dear Mr. Singh,
I liked your article and I also share the same view. I feel that coming CW games will decide the future of sports event organization in India. Frankly speaking I am bit worried that future does not look promising.
I have a request to you: I would like that you take this initiative to ring alarm bells in the parliament, in government agencies on behalf of the nation. Please try to organize rallies or other political events (e.g. hunger strike etc.) to gain some momentum over this issue.
The success of CW games is very critical for developing nation like India. This success is not only important for our nations good will and image but also important for the economy of India. Good organization of CW games will propel the tourism and hence infrastructure of the country.
Best Regards,
Hi AMAR Ji,
Nice to see you in the blog, I am a student doing Masters in America. I as a Indian do feel great if India hosts an Olympics, I and humanity will feel great if I see no one is dying for hunger in my country. As a part of the internal governing system, tell me something honestly you did for poor welfare in our country. Don’t tell me about the funds you donated to Clinton Foundation????????????????
Dear Hari, I understand your concern. I think it is not a right platform for me to mention where all I have donated money. I feel donations from individuals are not going to make any difference for the poor. I suppose even a biggest industrial house of this country donates its entire wealth to the nation, I think gains for every individual will not reach even in 3 figures. Therefore, development of poor and needy requires sincere effort from ruling establishment, the government. I have never been a minister at the centre but during our 3 years rule in UP we did try to reach out to poor directly by offering them things like “Berojgaari Bhatta” and “Kanyavidya Dhan”. Given a chance, I assure you that I will not disappoint.
Respected Sir,
Let Olympics remain a dream because the reality on the ground is too horrifying. A couple Indian students have been killed in Australia. Our first priority should be to build better educational institutions in the country so that our children do not have to spend millions to a butchery like Australia to study and slave there. They spend millions, their parents sell off their everything to raise funds and then they also lose their sons and daughters only to know that their children are not safe in a foreign land inhabited by the children of convicts. It is pointed out that Australia was inhabited by convicts from England. British government offered to the convicts serving life terms in jails in Britain that they could live like free citizens in Australia if they went there and did not return to England. The novels of Charles Dickens and other literature of the age gives graphic description.
So our first priority should be to sideline the games and build educational institutions. India is after a struggling country with poor resources.
A.L.Rawal
Olympics..in India. You gotta be kidding Mr.Singh.. We struggle to 3 medals..and you talking about hosting olympics.. Biggest Joke i would say… Look at Australia…Polulation around 3 crore…India Population of more than 100 crore…and just look at the medals tally… Autralia is only behind China and USA…and we ….frankly speaking we were not to be seen… Australia suffered a huge embarrasment when they could not win a single medal in one of the olympics…They considered that as a national shame…But they did not keep quiet and they still do remember it..but instead of playing the blame game as it is done traditionally in india…the Australian government set up an academy to nurture all sports which includes cricket… they offer scholarships…they train new talents and look after their developmental needs till they become perfect…what are we doing? Nothing … Government has become blind since independence…its just not congress…but all parties are power hungry swines…. The only thing we can play is Cricket…Hockey anyways has become history….. Wake up Goverment? Wake up….
Dear Mr Singh,
Congratulations for the blog, very clever on line advertising I must say because as I could not resist to read what Amar Singh has got to do with Olympics and so finally landed up here!
I don’t want to miss a TV debate when you are there, not because I like Samajwadi party but I like your straight speak (although they are not always straight), I think you have upstaged Lalu ji as the most popular politician for apolitical people by your witty and often entertaining comments.
Regarding the Olympics dream, I humbly want to point out that you should first try to put your weight behind developing basic sports infrastructure in the country and then Olympics will automatically come to India. Also do something for the most popular sports called football, it is much cheaper to play and it has all the commercial potentials of cricket sans the betting, if football is promoted you will also get more athletic sportsmen developed as the game requires it.
Dear sir,
i do agree that sports do get tourist, forex and so on…. thats will be pride to our nation.
but the fact is why do we need pride when about more than 50% of the population is paid under US$1? look why do we have to waste such a huge money on games? rather use it in providing basic living elements such as clean water, minimum 8 hours of power in every part of the country…
look what government is wasting is tax payers money…. and it is collected from all over india and why spend in on a single city? rather if they are very much interested in improving sports infrastructure try building a good sports stadiums in all district headquarters in our nations. this will give access to sports to students. looks like government is going into show bizz… thats why at Melbourne we have movie actors representing india rather that sports starts. even in London its the same…. why on earth do we need movie stars to promote a game? this shows how interested our government is in these games….
look my advise is if they want to conduct a game event first try to improve our local infrastructure and sportsmen. then go for big event.
